One traces its linkage all the way back to the Yellow Emperor. During the Zhou dynasty this branch was the ruler of the State of Liu (劉/刘). Another branch traces itself to the Zhou dynasty royal family. This branch was given the county of Liu in present day Henan (河南). During the Han dynasty the emperor bestowed his own surname to some of his followers. Finally some members of the nomad tribes took up this surname when they decided to adopt Han surnames.
