I watched a show that had decendants of the Chinese Head tax talking about why they should get money.
It makes me sick that these people cant speak english yet they
want the english speaking population that had nothing to do with this issue, to pay taxes so they can get money. Im sure many of them have collected lots of tax dollars already. How productive can a person be in Canada if they cant even speak the language. It is quit clear why the chinese wanted to come to Canada, for money and they were willing to pay for the privlege, so be it, it was their choice. What kind of man would leave his family like that anyway. We are an easy going society
and we get taken advantage of all the time. I dont care about something that happened 100 years ago and I sure dont want to pay for it. There should be a statue of limitation for crap like this.
In fact, if it wasnt for the generous people of Canada, they wouldnt have the rights and freedoms to persue this money grab.
TAKE THE APOLOGY and get on with your life. There were chinese people wanting compensation that were Daughter in laws, Son in laws, who else wants to win the lottery???

Bob, as you correctly observed she as a political appointee was just spouting the official lines of the government at the time of her speech. She and a certain junior minister of the time placed their own interest ahead of their own people and those whose sacrifices made it possible for them to attain their positions.

The views of Vivian Poy in her presentation to the audience in Winnipeg on September 13, 2003, are inaccurate and her logic is woefully flawed. I am surprised that she has not made an effort to have them expunged from the internet, but then that would allow history to judge her ignorance for years to come.

It is not surprising for a token appointment, by a Liberal government no less, to act as an apologist for injustice. But to suggest that the "culture" of the Chinese can rationalize refusing to address this injustice is simply incredible. If Ms. Poy made the effort to look in the archives, or even read the Hansards of the day, rather than relying on acadmeic 'advisors' or paid consultants and staff, she would get an unequivocal statement that many Chinese who came to Canada (and even the Chinese Counsul of the time) make it clear they wished to remain in Canada and to be treated fairly as true Canadians. A concept as simple as this seems to have flown over the dear Senator's head.
